The Oscars 2016 – Nominations & Predictions

With the 88th Academy Awards (or The Oscars 2016) airing later this evening, here’s a list of the nominations alongside my predictions and hopes for the ceremony, which I will update later with the winners of this year’s awards.

Leading the nominations this year is The Revenant with nominations, and Mad Max: Fury Road with 10. Hosted by Chris Rock, The Oscars will be broadcast live this evening on the Sky Movies Oscars Channel (Channel 304), with Red Carpet coverage and live previews from 11.30pm, followed by the awards ceremony at 1.30am.

If you’re watching the Awards this evening, or catching up with the highlights tomorrow night, don’t forget to play #OscarsBingo for the chance to win Showcase Cinema tickets, too!

BEST PICTURE

The Big Short
Bridge of Spies
Brooklyn
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
The Revenant
Room
Spotlight

Who I would vote for: Mad Max: Fury Road, although I would love for Brooklyn to stand a chance.

Who I think will win: I think it will be a close tie between Mad Max: Fury Road and The Revenant, although Spotlight has made its way in to the running, too. As fascinating as The Revenant was, I think a lot of people have realised that it’s not as well-rounded as Mad Max: Fury Road, stunning in cinematography and visuals but not so much in substance, whereas Mad Max: Fury Road has it all. Spotlight was incredibly interesting but, for me, it had many flaws, as well.

==========================================================

ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

Bryan Cranston, Trumbo
Matt Damon, The Martian
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant
Michael Fassbender, Steve Jobs
Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl

Who I would vote for: As much as I would love for Eddie to win this, I’m rooting for Leo!

Who I think will win: It’s got to be Leo, surely.

==========================================================

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

Cate Blanchett, Carol
Brie Larson, Room
Jennifer Lawrence, Joy
Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years
Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn

Who I would vote for: Saoirse Ronan

Who I think will win: Brie Larson, although this would be just as well deserved.

==========================================================

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

Christian Bale, The Big Short
Tom Hardy, The Revenant
Mark Ruffalo, Spotlight
Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies
Sylvester Stallone, Creed

Who I would vote for: Jacob Tremblay should have been nominated for this for his performance in Room. Brie definitely deserves all of the praise she is receiving, but it was all about Jacob, for me. Out of these nominees, I’d go for Hardy.

Who I think will win: It’s got to be between Ruffalo and Stallone, but I think Hardy has a good chance, too.

==========================================================

ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Hateful Eight
Rooney Mara, Carol
Rachel McAdams, Spotlight
