With Emma Watson recently denying rumours that she was set to play the lead in the upcoming film adaptation of EL James’ popular erotica novel 50 Shades of Grey, this week reports suggest that Shailene Woodley is now the favoured choice.
Woodley recently made a name for herself playing George Clooney‘s daughter in Oscar-nominated drama The Descendants. The 20-year-old actress has now allegedly “caught the eye” of 50 Shades author E. L. James, and has been named as the potential lead in a recent profile on up-and-coming Hollywood stars by The Hollywood Reporter.
James’ best-selling novel 50 Shades of Grey is the first in a trilogy that follows college graduate Anastasia Steele as she meets and falls for a young business magnate named Christian Grey. But this isn’t a love story. Grey is a man consumed by the need to control. Powerless to resist his intimidating beauty, Ana soon finds herself signing her body away to fulfil his erotic needs. Desperate to get close to this secretive yet alluring man, she prepares to explore her own dark desires, as the couple embark on a passionately physical affair – the type that’s best kept behind closed, and locked, doors.
Topping the best-seller lists around the world, the film is now set to be turned into a feature film by The Social Network producers Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca.
“The next big stars are the actress who plays Anastasia Steele and the actor who plays Christian Grey,” said Twilight producer Marty Bowen. “They will certainly have an invitation to the A-list table.”
With rumours that Magic Mike star Matt Bomer is set to play the masochistic Christian, the attention has more recently turned to who will be playing innocent graduate Ana.
Last month Harry Potter star Emma Watson denied rumours that she was going to play the role, and more recently Digital Spy readers voted for Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke as their top choice.
But what do we think about Woodley? She definitely seems fitting for the role and from The Descendants we know that she can give a strong and emotion-filled performance. So have we found the right couple for the roles?
Producers of the 50 Shades of Grey adaptation are now targeting screenwriters, with Dan Fogelman, Veena Sud, Karen Croner and Kelly Marcel all named as contenders.
Alas, we have no confirmations for anything as of yet, so we will just have to carry on guessing.
