(Written for Lost In The Multiplex)
After the success of his feature directorial debut with the dramatic thriller Martha Marcy May Marlene earlier this year, directed Sean Durkin has been tapped to helm a biopic of the famed rock icon Janis Joplin, Deadline have reported this week.
Joplin, best known for being the lead singer of the psychedelic-acid rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company and her later solo career, is set to be played by Tony-winner Nina Arianda, who won the Best Actress Tony for her work in the play Venus In Fu, for which she has received some brilliant critic appraisal.
The film, which will be titled ‘Joplin’, will look back on the final six months of the 1960s singer’s life, and will include some cradle-to-grave elements with flashbacks to parts of Joplin’s early career.
Producer Peter Newman and his partners have been trying to get Joplin going for over a decade. The $20 million pic is now scheduled to start production early next year.
