Christian Bale To Get Revenge In ‘Out of the Furnace’

(Written for BritScene)

British actor Christian Bale, next to be seen playing The Dark Knight in the final film of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy this summer, has rejoined Scott Cooper‘s revenge drama Out of the Furnace after dropping out of the project last year.

Out of the Furnace follows a man released from prison after serving four years. While he initially hopes to stick to the straight and narrow, his plans for a quiet life are ruined when he decides to find out who murdered his younger brother and avenge the man’s killing.

Formerly known as The Low Dweller when Brad Ingelsby handed in his script back in 2008, the film originally attracted directors such as Ridley Scott and Rupert Sanders as well actors including Mark Wahlberg.

With Scott now producing through his banner Scott Free alongside Leonardo DiCaprio‘s company Appian Way, Cooper (Crazy Heart) has since been confirmed as the film’s director after picking up the project last April, which he has been re-writing to suit his needs with Bale set to star.

This is not the first time that Bale has been attached to the project, however, as he was involved with the project when Sanders (Snow White And The Hunstman) was set to direct the film in 2009, but Bale had to pull out due to scheduling reasons.

Cooper is now trying to cast the film’s villain too, for which he has targeted Viggo Mortensen, and the character of Bale’s brother, which has been narrowed down to Casey Affleck, Garett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch and Channing Tatum.

There is also the possibility and intent for Robert Duvall, who appeared in Cooper’s Crazy Heart, to join the cast, but no deals have yet been made.

As well as starring in the summer blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises, Bale is also set to start filming back-to-back in two of Terrence Malick’s films, Lawless and Knight Of Cups, later this year.

Apparently, the ever busy Bale will be fitting in filming for Furnace between talking about playing Batman and the start of filming for Lawless.
