Marvel Studios have confirmed The Killing’s Patty Jenkins as the director of Thor 2, the sequel to the first Thor film based on the Marvel Comics character – the God of Thunder.
Patty Jenkins previously directed Monster starring Charlize Theron who won an Academy Award for her performance. Jenkins also received an Emmy nomination for directing the pilot of AMC’s acclaimed series The Killing, but with so few blockbuster titles behind her name, many have questioned the choice for her as director.
The news of a director for Thor 2 comes after the recent change in the US release date, which is now set for 15th November, 2013. This will be the first Marvel Studios production to open outside of the summer frame so Jenkins will have to live up to Kenneth Branagh who directed the first Thor film, which grossed $448.5 million worldwide.
Natalie Portman will also return to her role as love-interest Jane Foster, along with Tom Hiddleston as Loki.
Still two years away, Thor actor Chris Hemsworth has recently finished his second go around in Joss Whedon‘s The Avengers, including several of the Marvel Comics superheroes, which is set to be released in the UK on 27th April, 2012.
