Carey Mulligan To Work With the Coen Brothers and Spike Jonze

(Written for Lost In The Multiplex)

Carey Mulligan gave a stunning performance is last month’s Drive, and is now becoming a face that we look forward to seeing. Fortunately, she’s keeping herself busy in 2012, landing the female lead in Coen BrothersInside Llewyn Davis and beginning negotiations for a lead role in a project for Spike Jonze.

Inside Llewyn Davis follows a musician trying to make it in the 1960s New York music scene. Mulligan, the lead female musician, will star opposite Oscar Isaac. Whilst it is unknown if Mulligan will be asked to sing in the film, she has certainly proven that she is up to the job in Steve McQueen’s Shame, which is set to be released in January 2012.

Written, directed and produced by the Coen Brothers, alongside Scott Rudin, Inside Llewyn Davis is set to be released in 2013.

As for the Spike Jonze project, Mulligan will join Joaquin Phoenix in a film about world leaders uniting to discuss cataclysmic events, which is written by Charlie Kaufman. The film, currently untitled, will also be produced by Megan Ellison.

Mulligan is currently filming for The Great Gatsby, a film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, in which she plays Daisy Buchanan alongside Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jay Gatsby. The plan is for her to then begin filming Inside Llewyn Davis in February and for the Spike Jonze project in spring.

I’m a big fan of Mulligan’s roles and the films she stars in, so there’s a lot to look forward to over the next couple of years, with The Great Gatsby as the one to most anticipate. You can’t beat a book adaptation from the Jazz Age, and Mulligan is sure to shine.
