Nick Roberts and Josh Morris met during freshman year in Gainesville, FL and have since formed the incredible And The Giraffe. Their first EP, Something for Someone, was released on 21st August 2011 and was recorded over the course of the summer in Nick’s cramped apartment bedroom along with the help of a few friends.
The EP opens brilliantly with ‘Underground Love‘, introducing us to the brilliant vocals of Nick Roberts which are combined with light piano and guitar notes.
‘1055‘ carries on this soothing ambient with more folky vocals and as Nick sings, “My God, I almost fell in love. And Lord knows, that I’ve had enough” you could almost lose yourself in its dreamy background melody.
‘Welshrats‘ is shorter than the previous songs and ‘Magic 8‘ is shorter still, yet they still carry the same acoustic quality with the addition of a few sound effects.
Josh Morris then provides the vocals for ‘Masquerade‘, a deeper vocal but with the same chilling instrumental in the background. This is a nice twist in the album, giving a slightly different feeling before changing back with ‘Still‘, a beautifully written ending to the EP: “We’re going to be big stars someday. And I’m looking for the answers with my head turned up to the sky.”
This is a truly stunning EP, similar to the likes of Bon Iver and Iron and Wine, and is available to download for free (or a donation if you like) on their website here. You can also become a fan on their Facebook page too.
If you like And The Giraffe, Nick also has a solo project called Summertime Kids and released his first EP about 5 months ago, which you can listen to here, and which was featured on My Old Kentucky Blog and NBC New York.
